5 All Star Supplements
5 All-Star Supplements
By Richard Laliberte, Prevention
Fri, May 08, 2009
Dietary supplements have officially gone mainstream:
About two-thirds of Americans take them, and over three-quarters of doctors recommend them to patients, according to recent surveys. Among the dizzying array of natural products found on pharmacy and health food store shelves, we've uncovered five truly outstanding complementary treatments in pill form that hold up to scientific scrutiny just as well as prescription drugs do.
For Everyone: Fish Oil
The Research: Talk about a heartfelt endorsement: "The only dietary supplement consistently shown in randomized clinical trials to work against cardiac death is fish oil," says Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, DrPH, assistant professor of cardiology and epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. Omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, more commonly known as EPA and DHA) found in salmon, tuna, and other fish appear to fight cardiac death by stabilizing the heart's electrical system. Other benefits include lowering blood pressure and triglycerides, slowing arterial plaque buildup, and easing systemic inflammation. Fish oil was more successful than statins at preventing death in heart failure patients, according to a recent Italian study.
Bonus Benefits: Research shows the omega-3s in fish oil may also help lower your risk of stroke and nonlethal heart attacks, relieve anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
Try It: Since most Americans don't eat two servings of fish a week as suggested by the American Heart Association, many experts recommend taking a daily supplement containing 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA combined (even if you are a fan of fish). "The main side effect is fishy burps, but storing softgels in the freezer and taking them with food can help," Mozaffarian advises. Nearly all commercial fish oil brands are reliably safe, but check labels for the EPA and DHA amounts per serving.
For Everyone: Vitamin D
The Research: It's suddenly one of the most popular vitamins on the planet, and for good reason: Up to 53% of us may not get enough vitamin D from sources such as direct sunlight or food (fish and fortified dairy, for example), reports the National Institutes of Health — and the current guideline of 400 IU daily has recently been dismissed by experts as insufficient. That's because this nutrient has wide-ranging health impacts: More than 1,000 human and lab studies indicate that vitamin D not only augments calcium absorption but may also ward off breast, colorectal, ovarian, and other cancers. And getting too little vitamin D could cause premature death from heart disease, according to a recent study. "Vitamin D has really gotten the attention of the medical community," says Michael Holick, MD, director of the Bone Health Care Clinic at Boston University School of Medicine.
Bonus Benefits: Getting more vitamin D may also lower your risk of developing autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis, studies have found. And not getting enough has been linked to bone, joint, and muscle pain; fibromyalgia; and osteoarthritis.
Try It: Take vitamin D as a supplement because food and sun are rarely sufficient, particularly if you live in northern states that get little daily solar radiation during the winter. "If you take 1,000 IU a day and get 5 to 10 minutes of unblocked sun a few times a week, you're almost guaranteed to get enough," says Holick. Supermarket and pharmacy brands are considered safe and effective and cost pennies per pill.
For People with High Cholesterol: Reducol
The Research: Plant sterol and stanol compounds in a healthy diet can lower LDL (bad) cholesterol by as much as 20% — comparable to the effects of statin drugs. But the small amounts in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds aren't always enough to provide the 2 g daily of sterols and stanols the AHA suggests for people with high cholesterol, which can increase the risk of heart disease. Foods containing manufactured sterol/stanol blends such as Reducol can help: In one study, Reducol added to margarine lowered LDL by 15%. Fat in foods helps aid absorption of sterols and stanols, but Reducol pills may help as well (e.g., Nature Made CholestOff and Twinlab Cholesterol Success, both in 900 mg servings). "The pills aren't as effective as food, but they can still lower LDL cholesterol by up to 10%," says Peter Jones, PhD, director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals at Canada's University of Manitoba.
Bonus Benefits: Initial evidence suggests that sterols and stanols may reduce the risk of breast, colon, and stomach cancers. For now, though, ask your doctor before taking Reducol for any reason other than your cholesterol.
Try It: "I recommend 900 mg three times per day for high cholesterol, and then reduce the dose to 450 mg three times per day if LDL numbers are coming down," says New York physician Fred Pescatore, MD, MPH, author of The Hamptons Diet. Pescatore puts nearly all of his patients on Reducol, even as a preventive measure (900 mg once per day in this case). Some products, such as Country Life TLC (aka CardiaBeat), now blend sterols and omega-3s into a single pill.
For People with Tummy Trouble: Culturelle
The Research: Culturelle is one of the most-researched probiotics on the planet. The only US dietary supplement containing the active culture Lacto-bacillus GG (LGG), it acts directly on the immune system and helps ward off viral illness; replaces good bacteria killed in the intestines during antibiotic therapy; and keeps harmful bacteria, fungi, parasites, and other infectious microorganisms in check (it eliminated up to 47% of traveler's diarrhea in two studies). Culturelle survives unusually well in stomach acid to colonize the intestine and contains 10 billion live cells per dose — 10 times more than most yogurts. "That's important because probiotics can't help keep your gut healthy if they don't last, and few do as well as LGG," says Jon Vanderhoof, MD, a professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. In a recent Australian trial, people who ate yogurt containing LGG cleared antibiotic-resistant bacteria from the gut in 4 weeks, while those eating yogurt without it didn't.
Bonus Benefits: Studies suggest LGG may also ease irritable bowel syndrome.
Try It: Follow Culturelle's dose instruction of one capsule per day. Refrigerating the supplement isn't required, though doing so may increase its shelf life. As intestinal flora begins to change, side effects such as bloating and gas usually disappear in a few days.
For People with Joint Pain: Pycnogenol
The Research: This French maritime pine bark extract is cited in more than 200 studies and continues to impress researchers. In two recent trials, osteoarthritis patients who took Pycnogenol for 3 months reduced their pain and stiffness by 35 to 55% and needed fewer drugs such as NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors. Pycnogenol's efficacy is probably due to its having both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. "Pycnogenol's compounds are especially potent, yet there aren't really side effects," says Sherma Zibadi, MD, a graduate research associate who studied the extract at the University of Arizona's College of Public Health.
Bonus Benefits: Pycnogenol wards off heart disease by lowering LDL and raising HDL (good) cholesterol, reducing blood pressure and risk of clotting, and controlling blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It has also reduced menstrual aches in a study, cutting days spent on pain meds in half. A new study shows it may even help fend off jet lag.
Try It: Take a 50 mg tablet two or three times daily with meals. Ask your doctor before you start, especially if you're on hypertension meds—and don't take over 200 mg a day, Zibadi says.
4 Suspect Supplements
Ask your doctor before taking any of these in pill form — you're probably getting what you need from a healthy diet and a multivitamin.
FOLIC ACID
It can help prevent birth defects, but a 2007 study found that 1 mg daily (that's more than twice the recommended levels) via supplements may raise colon cancer risk. Done having kids? Get your 400 mcg daily from most grains and cereals.
VITAMIN E
A 2008 study found that taking supplements of vitamin E may increase the risk of lung cancer, especially among smokers. Also, more than a dozen common prescription meds can interact with high doses of E.
SELENIUM
Consuming more than 400 mcg a day raises the risk of premature death, according to a Johns Hopkins University study; many selenium pills contain half this amount. Another study linked selenium to developing type 2 diabetes after 7 years of supplementation.
BETA-CAROTENE
Several studies indicate that taking beta-carotene supplements may increase your risk of cancer or heart disease.

Your Hair
Spoon Up: Low-fat cottage cheese
Hair is almost all protein, so attaining a strong, vibrant mane starts with eating enough of it. Reduced-fat cottage cheese is a protein heavyweight, with 14 grams in half a cup.
Pack: Pumpkin seeds
Zinc helps reduce shedding, says Francesca Fusco, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center. Toss a tablespoon of these zinc-heavy seeds into your cereal.
Your Brain
Surf for: Arctic char
This cold-water fish is a great source of the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA, which can improve brain function and ward off the blues, says Elizabeth Somer, R.D., author of Age-Proof Your Body. Omega-3s help squelch inflammation in the brain and regulate feel-good neurotransmitters. Sprinkle fillets with sea salt, ground pepper, and fresh lemon juice, then pan-fry on medium-high until one side is slightly brown. Flip and cook until the inside is slightly pink (6 to 8 minutes total).
Saute: Kale
Feed the 100 billion neurons in your noggin with nutritious kale. A study in the journal Neurology reports that getting two-plus servings per day of veggies — especially leafy green ones like kale — slows cognitive decline by 40 percent. Temper kale's bitter flavor by sautéing it lightly with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, a chopped garlic clove, 2 tablespoons of pine nuts, and a pinch of salt.
Your Nose
Nosh: Sunflower seeds
Hay fever affects more than 40 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Halt the drip with vitamin E. Researchers suspect it calms the parts of your immune system involved in allergies. With 49 percent of your daily vitamin E needs in an ounce, these seeds are your shnoz's best friend.
Your Eyes
Scramble: Whole eggs
Forgo egg-white omelets. The yolks are an all-star source of two antioxidants — lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that fight cataracts as well as macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness. Don't worry: University of Massachusetts researchers have concluded that eating an average of one egg yolk a day will not hurt your cholesterol levels.
Steam: Orange cauliflower
Yes, that really is orange cauliflower popping up in your produce aisle. Food scientists at Cornell University reworked the white variety to provide 25 times as much beta-carotene, which maintains the protective covering over the cornea. As with any low-cal vegetable, you can enjoy peachy cauliflower with reckless abandon, provided you don't drown it in salt and fat-laden butter.
Your Skin
Simmer: Tomatoes
Cozy up to your nearest Italian eatery. The fruit is especially beneficial when cooked—more of the carotenoid lycopene makes it into the skin, where it can limit UV damage to lower skin-cancer risk and hold off wrinkles.
Experiment with: Hemp
The omega-3 fatty acids in hemp help your skin retain moisture so you don't look like a cast member from Dawn of the Dead. Toss a tablespoon each of lemon juice, pine nuts, and shelled hemp seeds ($9 for 8 oz, manitoba*harvest*.com) into a blender with ³ cup of hemp-seed oil ($10 for 8 oz, manitoba*harvest*.com), a chopped garlic clove, a pinch of salt, and ½ cup fresh basil. Whirl to create a delicious and healthy pesto.
Your Lips
Munch On: Walnuts
To get moist, beautiful, chap-free lips, your body needs to constantly replace old skin cells with new ones. "Omega-3 fats help regulate this turnover so that it happens all the time," Fusco says. And unlike much-lauded almonds, walnuts have tons of the phat fats. So do your lips a favor and pucker up to an ounce (about 14 shelled halves) a day; eat them plain or add them to salads, cereal, oatmeal, trail mix, or your favorite muffin recipe.
Your Nails
Grill up: Beef
Of all the sources of highly absorbable iron in your supermarket, beef is among the best. Low iron levels, which are common in women, not only zap your zip, but, Fusco says, can cause brittle nails. With the least fat of the common cuts, top round (and other round cuts) deserve high billing on your broiler pan.
Your Breasts
Add: Broccoli sprouts
Sulforaphane, found in baby broccoli, fires up enzymes that may stop breast-cancer cells from growing. Johns Hopkins University researchers discovered that broccoli sprouts have up to 20 times as much of this compound as fully grown plants. Pimp your sandwiches and salads with ½ cup of robustly flavored broccosprouts — developed by scientists at Johns Hopkins. A one-ounce serving contains 73 milligrams of the naturally occurring precursor of sulforaphane.
Your Heart
Snap Up: Asparagus
Italian researchers have found that the B vitamin folate reduces homocysteine, an amino acid believed to promote inflammation, which can up your risk of heart disease. Eight steamed asparagus spears deliver 20 percent of your daily folate requirement, as well as other heart-chummy nutrients like potassium.
Sip: Purple grape juice
Pull over, OJ! According to researchers at the University of Glasgow, purple grape juice is high in phenolics, "a group of powerful antioxidants that swallow up heart-damaging free radicals," says Anne VanBeber, R.D., Ph.D., a nutrition professor at Texas Christian University. To cut calories while guarding your arteries, mix equal parts grape juice and seltzer.
Your Gut
Reach for: Dried plums, aka Prunes
These high-fiber fruits help keep your gastric system working like a finely tuned machine. They may shrink your stomach, too. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that among 74,000 women surveyed, those who got more fiber were 49 percent less likely to suffer weight gain. Make your own trail mix with a handful of chopped pitted prunes plus walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dried blueberries, and hemp seeds.
Toss in: Tempeh
Made from whole soybeans that are then fermented, tempeh pads our guts with beneficial bacteria. After taking up residence, VanBeber says, these live microorganisms improve digestion, reduce gas production, and kill bacteria that cause ulcers. Like tofu, tempeh soaks up the flavors around it, so crumble a block and toss it into chili, soup, and pasta sauce.
Your Girl Parts
Grab: Blueberries
From vision-protecting vitamin C to appetite-quelling fiber, there are plenty of reasons to be sweet on these tiny antioxidant powerhouses. And scientists now believe that, like cranberries, blueberries battle urinary tract infections, Somer says.
Pour on: Kefir
Yeast infections put a serious damper on bed play. "Having lots of fermented milk products, including kefir, is a good way to reduce infections," VanBeber says. These products may add beneficial bacteria to the vagina, keeping infectious bacteria in line, early research indicates. Blend ½ cup low-fat plain kefir (we like Lifeway) with a cup of milk, a handful of berries, and a tablespoon of almond butter for a creamy smoothie.
Your Muscles & Joints
Mix in: Ricotta cheese
Loaded with all of the amino acids muscles need to grow and mend, whey protein is a virtuoso when it comes to helping you build a buff bod. While milk curd is used to make most cheeses, ricotta is produced from the whey that's left behind in the cheese-making process. Mix low-fat ricotta with scrambled eggs, salsa, and broccoli sprouts for a killer breakfast.
Drizzle: Extra-virgin olive oil
Ditch fat-free dressings. Olive oil contains oleocanthal, an anti-inflammatory that may work like ibuprofen, report scientists in the journal Nature. Drizzle two teaspoons of Spectrum organic extra-virgin ($12 for 12.7 oz, spectrumorganics.com) onto your veggies.
Your Bones
Indulge in: Chocolate
Chocolate is rich in magnesium, vital to bone health. "It forms the crystal lattice that gives bone its structure," VanBeber says. That may be why University of Tennessee scientists linked higher mag intake with greater bone-mineral density. Nibble an ounce of the dark stuff each day.
Open up: Canned salmon
New research suggests that the omega-3s in these fatty swimmers can boost bone density. Canned salmon is inexpensive and typically lower in heavy metals like mercury than many other fish. "Canned salmon [with bones] is also a good source of calcium — another bone must," Somer says. For a better burger, make patties with a tin of salmon, an egg, ¼ cup breadcrumbs, ¼ cup chopped onion, and ½ tablespoon cumin powder.
Your Teeth
Peel: Mango and Kiwi
Together, these two tropical fruits deliver more of the proven gum protector vitamin C than an orange. Bonus: Researchers in Italy have found that each fruit portion you down daily (that's just a single kiwi) reduces your risk for oral cancer by nearly 50 percent.
Stir-Fry: Shrimp
If you have periodontal disease, you're churning out more cytokines, proteins that stimulate inflammation — turning your mouth into a hotbed of pain and bleeding. Research has shown that vitamin D can put the smackdown on cytokines. Three ounces of shrimp provides 65 percent of the RDA of vitamin D, so cast the crustaceans into your next wok full of vegetables.
Day 3
Anyway - not as much cheating today. Ended up with a few croutons in my salad but didn't eat the breadstick. Did have way too many pistachios today. I need snacks! I don't have snacks! Without good snacks I'm lost! Especially when I'm sitting at a desk all day. Ugh.
I know with my cutting of calories and increase of workouts that it's going hinder me a bit - I'm really tired right now and have been all day. I need to figure out something because it's drill week and I can't afford another day like today.
Tonight we're having a hobo meal like we do when camping - lots of veggies and turkey burger. I found some great recipes I want to try this week too but I don't know that MS is into recipes or prepping all that much. We'll see when I get home.

Day 2
I did start the day with HB eggs. MS had boiled a bunch for me last week, so after my workout I had 3 egg whites. throughout the day I had a string cheese, three natural PB and dark chocolate cookies (very small cookies), and one chocolate chip. Whoops. I also had a 4 oz chicken breast and some babybel cheese and pistachios tonight.
I'm not doing great, but I know tomorrow will be easier since I won't be around the baked goods. I did drink a LOT of water today - I made Crystal Lite so I had 2 quarts, 1 diet coke, and water. That's good at least.
Tomorrow's another day. I have lots of fun recipes to try and I'll be back on track.

Back on the Beach
I am now at 166 pounds. I'm chalking it up to a lot of stress, dealing with Stacy/therapy, stress about Mike's Mom possibly moving in, eating like crap because of the stress (Stress Eating is my forte) and not exercising enough.
So today that all changes. I'm staring SB again and when I get out to Mike's today I'm going to start P90X again. I need to get my strength back, I need to get my stretches in, and I need to be healthier.
Tuesday, March 02, 2010
Well, now I went backwards
But I ran and i need to get back to running more. That should help me.
Sunday, February 28, 2010
Oh well
Saturday I had the leftover piece of apple pie I had made for Butterbar. I needed to do that anyway since I tried a different recipe. Then we went to the Pinewood Derby race for Alex (Alison's boy) and had pizza there - Valentino's this time. Then turkey and cheese slices for supper with popcorn as my treat.
It's been a rough weekend.
I'm on Phase II now, kind of. I'm not going to stress if I eat popcorn or something, but I am going to be more conscious of what I'm eating so I'm not eating it all the time. Hopefully that will help. I'll weigh in tomorrow and see what the damage did over the weekend.
On the workout side, we're still doing P90X and I'm going to try to run today. It's supposed to be 30 degrees so that will be good. Until then, I'm going to have some breakfast and start working on my running scrapbook.

Checking in
So week 1 of P90X is done. I love the X Stretch day. It's awesome. Yoga X kicks my ass. And I'm struggling with everything else too. But it's working. My legs are feeling more solid than they have and I'm looking forward to looking hot this summer in a bikini.

P90X
This morning was Yoga X and I really enjoyed it, what I could do. I have to work on my upward dog - that needs a lot of work, as does the balance stuff. But since it's only the first time doing this program, I'm feeling pretty good about it all. I just wish it wasn't 90 minutes. That's going to be tough to do AMs before work, but I guess I'll make it happen.
Too much
Yesterday just wasn't a good day altogether. I wasn't feeling right - not sick, but not mentally there. It wasn't pleasant. I'm hoping that's going to go away.

Day four complete
MS and I started P90X on Wednesday with the Lean program and it's going well. It's tough to get up at 4:30 but it's the only time that works for both of us to workout together, and I will admit that working out together is much better. We're accountable to each other and MS can play the guilt card pretty well.
So I weighed this morning on his scale, just for kicks and I was at 152. I don't really believe his scale, plus it was after our workout, but it was nice to see that number anyway. His friend is retiring from the Navy in June so I have to get lean and toned before then in case I can go along (some schedule conflicts I have to work out first).
It's been good. This weekend will be tough when he's at work, but hopefully I can stay strong. :)

Today it begins
So here I go! 157.8 this morning. I blame some of that on the white trash pizza and bag of white cheddar Old Dutch popcorn I had yesterday.
I'm starting off well - eggs with cheese and Crystal Lite. MS is starting Phase II today so my challenge lies ahead. But what I did was go to the grocery store and I bought my favorite low carb Breyer's ice cream so in two weeks I'll have a treat ready for me. It'll be good. :)
Friday, February 12, 2010
Can I just say...
But tomorrow should be a good day to get back at it the right way. I can't wait. I'm going to start with some breakfast with KG and then go from there. Yay!
Wednesday, February 10, 2010
Not quite there yet
MS has been doing really well on Phase I. He's doing great, in fact. I had called him the other day to see if he wanted to order Girl Scout cookies and he said, "No, do you want me to go off my diet?" :) And despite my reassurance that he would be off the diet and working harder than he is now (due to spring and concrete and gardening) he could burn off those extra calories, he still said no.
I'm so proud.
But I need to get crackin'. I'm not feeling fat, but I'm not feeling great either. I did lose 4 pounds (last Friday since the Saturday we got home from Hawaii). But I think that's because I was sick. :) Sometimes sickness is a good thing.

Today...a setback
And since he made me drink OJ the last two days, I decided to have an actual sandwich for lunch. SBK and I went to Wild Sage Grille for lunch and I had a buffalo sandwich with lettuce, tomato, pepperjack cheese, and then a tomato veggie soup until I found the mushroom and so I quit eating that.
Otherwise, I had a SB bar for breakfast, and popcorn for supper. I drank a lot of CL today and one DMD. It's been a bad day.
My intent is to start Phase I as soon as I can breathe without worrying about dripping from the nose. Hopefully the weekend. I won't feel right if I make MS stick to Phase I during the Super Bowl and I can eat anything. :(
Quick (sick) food update
Tuesday I went back to work. I forgot to boil eggs so I had a SB bar for breakfast, a string cheese, JJ's #12 Unwich without mayo, a diet Mt Dew, lots of Crystal Lite again...and then i got home where MS made me drink 2 glasses of OJ (!) and we had my chicken standby with broccoli, tomato and shredded cheese.
Not doing too bad considering. I'm feeling a little better today, but forgot to boil eggs again and since I'm still sick i'm drinking another glass of OJ. Hopefully tomorrow I can get back on the SB Phase I track.

Sick
This morning we were supposed to start P90X but as MS got up to exercise and i could barely move, though offered to come watch, he opted to curl back up in bed with me for an hour. So pictures and weigh in will come maybe Wednesday. I need to get healthy first.
But the eating plan begins! ... Once I can eat something, that is.

Trying this again
Weight today: 159.2. I'll have the official totals on Monday when we start. We're also going to do before and after photos, so I'll post those as well. Might as well be upfront about it all.

A new plan
Of course if I do that I can't really post it here. But here were some food thoughts I had today:
So I know this is the way things should happen, but it's so exhausting. I'm trying to watch my credit card bill this month, to keep it at my limit I've set for me - and that includes all my bills and things that automatically go to the card. I'm getting close and this statement doesn't close until next Wednesday, so I took a moment yesterday and planned out my next few meals so I maybe don't have to go grocery shopping too soon or too often.
Wednesday Lunch: SB meal; Wed. night: Chicken standard;
Thursday lunch: Chicken standard; Thursday night: eggs;
Friday lunch: Chicken standard; Friday night: Meatloaf;
Saturday lunch - going out to eat with sister (which will be a charge but I can keep that low);
Saturday night: meatloaf;
Sunday lunch - probably meatloaf; Sunday night - probably meatloaf or a SB pizza.
Monday lunch - meatloaf or eggs
Then I'll shop on Monday so I can make chicken for the next few days. (And of course, me being me, I have this all on a sticky and I'm crossing them off as I complete the meal - I'm such a geek).
It's just tiring because now I have to think ahead and think about what I'm buying. It's good for me though. My financial planner wants me to buy a house this spring, and while I am excited about the possibility I really don't have enough funding to do that just yet (at least not in my head). I got my step increase last week which was nice so I need to be putting money away again. Every little bit helps. I usually keep a semi-running total in my head anyway so I don't overbuy things. Sometimes though I forget about things like my haircut Monday because it wasn't a planned purchase or event, yet needed. It's just difficult sometimes.
Sunday, January 18, 2009
Day 14, January 2009
I'm going to have to watch my popcorn intake, but I don't want to just eat cheese either. i do have my mother's constitution when it comes to that.
I also need to drink more water based liquids - like crystal lite or water. Yesterday I only had diet coke. That was a little too much.
Saturday, January 17, 2009
Day 13, January 2009
I met up with Tre and Allison at Olive Garden for lunch, so I skipped breakfast because I always eat too much there. I had the soup and salad, only one breadstick (yay), but the soup had some pasta in which i forgot about. Oh well.
i ate way too much as usual so I didn't eat much this afternoon. I had my chicken mix for supper and the a mini-bag of popcorn for a snack tonight and a couple pieces of SF candy.
Not bad, but I really need to get out running.
Okay...this just popped in my head so I need to vent. Mr. CG from FB had commented on my photos there the other day - was it yesterday? maybe...anyway. I had posted pics of all my baking and he writes, "I hope you don't bake like this too often." I'm like, why? what's wrong with me baking. and he says, "It'd be hard to be on an eating plan with those."
This kind of pissed me off. First off, it's none of his damn business how much I bake or how often. Second, if I wanted to eat it all I can because it's again, none of his damn business. Third, What the hell?
Looking back, I think this is why I stopped talking to him 12 years ago when we stopped. I hated him constantly talking down to me about what I was doing with my life. What a prick.
I'm only writing this because I'm so pissed I want to make cookies and then post pictures of me scarfing them down just to show him that I can. But I know that I can't and won't do that. When I bake I really limit how many I can and will eat because I do that for me.
ugh. this guy has made my day so shitty I just want a cookie right now.
Friday, January 16, 2009
Day 12, January 2009
Started the day with a donut - sheesh. But I didn't want HB eggs today. I just wasn't in the mood for them. But then I had a meeting at 9, another at 10 and I finally got out at 12 and I was starving and crabby.
So I went home and had SB pizza. I had some nuts and SF candy in the afternoon. Then I had chicken mix for supper.
Then SF Twizzlers and Orville Smart Pop kettle corn - mini bag.
I know! I shouldn't have had the popcorn but I it was good and the mini bags are just the right amount.
So I think I'm basically back on Phase 2 which is okay...this is the phase where I'm supposed to lose the most weight, right? Tomorrow I'm hitting the soup and salad at OG so that'll help too.
Thursday, January 15, 2009
Day 11, January 2009
4 HB egg whites which I didn't eat until almost 10 which was a very bad thing
Had some Nut-rition nuts
SF candy
SF jello
scrambled eggs with peppers, tomatoes and cheese
And here's the bad thing:
SB Pepperoni Pizza
2 donuts
Oh those last two were the bad ones. Especially the donuts. This is why I shouldn't eat in the breakroom because there's extra food in there that I shouldn't eat. SO i'm going to have to go back to eating at my desk. It'll be best.
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Day ten, January 2009
Scrambled eggs
3 pieces Canadian Bacon
Lots of Lipton French Vanilla tea - yummmy with splenda
Chicken Mix
SF pudding
Almonds
SF Candy - again (I need to stop this...it gets in the way of my real food)
turkey slices
edamame
crystal lite
1 diet soda
I think I'm not eating enough again. I need to think about this. And I didn't make anything for lunch tomorrow so I'm going to have to go somewhere. That should be interesting. But at least I didn't eat the cake that was in the breakroom, or the chips I was really wanting.
Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Day nine, January 2009
Today:
4 HB egg whites
String cheese
Chicken Mix
Steamed veggies
Jello
Sugared donut - there's the first bad
hot cocoa - there's the second
Chicken with honey teriyaki, dijon, and cheese
Crystal Lite
Diet soda's
Debating on ice cream since I've already messed up.
And then, on facebook Nikki sends me the "which one of the 7 deadly sins are you" quiz and I end up with this:
You are the sin of gluttony. Gluttony is the an unreasonable desire to constantly eat more and more than your body needs. Food is usually your answer to problems and relaxation.
Great...just what I needed to hear. Basically, it's been a very rough day.

Day eight, January 2009
I weighed this morning and I was at 158. That's not bad. It's the week before whoosh week and I had a rough weekend so it's too be expected.
Food today:
4 HB Egg Whites
A lot of SF candy
string cheese
Chicken mix
Chicken mix again
spitchi mor
a couple slices of sargento cheese
Crystal Lite
Diet pops
I asked Kevin for some tips for different chicken recipes. He gave me a few ideas so I'm going to work on some of those.
Tomorrow will be better because I'll be back on my schedule.

Day seven, January 2009
We had breakfast at work, but of course that includes hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, and because we're weird where we work, we have salad. Well, I ate at 10 so I had eggs, bacon, jello and skim milk (which kind of buzzed my head a bit - odd). I was so hungry today, I almost broke down and had a doughnut. But I didn't! I had string cheese and some PB (on communion wafers, no less), and some SF candy.
Then I went grocery shopping so I don't have to tomorrow. I picked up some leaner ground beef so I can make some meatloaf. Jim W was talking about it today and I really got hungry for it. But tonight I just had my chicken mix again and some SF twizzlers.
I read though some of my August 2005 entries, back when I first got on SB. It was interesting to see how I went up and down with boredom of food. I'm kind of there right now but then I read about some of the recipes I used to make and got to thinking those would be good to do again. I'll have to experiment this week.
Earlier this weekend I was thinking I'd just do the 2 weeks of Phase I. I know when I started this again I thought I'd do 3 weeks, but then I was back to the two weeks. But now after reading my posts again I think I might go back to the three. If I can get a little more creative at night at least (my Chicken mix is great for work), I think I'll do fine. I do need to incorporate more salad though. I know that helped a lot the first time around.
Well, things to think about as I move into week two. One week down. I'll weigh tomorrow and see how I'm doing and will post here.

Day Six, January 2009
This is the problem with starting SB in the middle of winter when I can't go outside and grill. My options for eats are limited. It's not that I don't like chicken, because God knows I do, but I just miss having more options. Oh well. I still like my chicken mix, I just need to make some other stuff.
So today:
I missed breakfast because of meetings so I didn't eat anything until 10:15 for lunch:
Steak with real A1
Salad with low cal Italian
Cottage Cheese with sunflower seeds
jello (no SF) with grapes (not supposed to have - just remembered that now)
And lemonade - which I'm sure had sugar.
SF candy throughout day
Diet A&W (2)
Crystal Lite
Chicken, green peppers, tomatoes and the steamed veggie mix and cheese!
Not really the best day. This is funny to write it all down because I was going to have ice cream tonight because I've been so good. I still might because dammit, it's Saturday and I'd like to have some ice cream, but I'm really trying to be good. We'll see.
Friday, January 09, 2009
Day five, January 2009
4 HB Egg whites (I'm getting addicted to these. they are so easy!)
1 string cheese
8 oz (apprx) lean steak
Steamed veggie mix from GG (with carrots - whoops)
SF candy
spitchi mor
5 egg whites, 1 egg - scrambled with cheese, green peppers and tomatoes
3 slices Canadian bacon (yes, breakfast for supper)
Crystal Lite
Diet Coke
Diet Coke with Splenda
Diet A&W
Diet Sunkist
A little too much pop and probably a little too much SF candy, but they help me through the day which is all I care about right now. I was going to go grocery shopping tonight but I was so tired I just decided to come home.
I really want pizza. It's Friday. Friday is supposed to be pizza day and I haven't had any since Sunday (and that was icky pizza). Maybe I'll do Phase 1 and 1/2 like I used to. We'll see.
Thursday, January 08, 2009
Day four, January 2009
4 HB Egg whites
Small amount of Chicken mix with cheese
SF Jello pudding
SF candy
Turkey slices
mustard
2 qts crystal lite
Diet Cokes
Diet A&W
Today was a bad day. It doesn't help that I'm sick, now on drugs, but this morning was bad. I didn't eat my eggs until 8:30, and I felt lightheaded for most of the morning afterward. I was so busy and I didn't realize how much I should have been eating until I went to Casey's to pick up things and we were standing in the hallway talking about JG and my head started to spin. Not good. Of course then I went to the doctor who gave me drugs. Yay drugs!
I had some SF candy this afternoon and that really did help, amazingly enough. But I'm not that hungry so I'm going to have to force myself to eat because I can't be weak this weekend.
Wish me luck tomorrow!
Wednesday, January 07, 2009
Day three, January 2009
Food:
4 HB egg whites
2 Canadian bacon
1 string cheese
2 Diet Coke w/ Splenda
Chicken mix with cheese...mmmm.
SF Jello pudding
1 Diet A&W
6 slices turkey with mustard
2qts crystal lite.
I find I'm skipping the night snack...just realized that now, shockingly enough. So I might find something to eat before bed.
I'm also not feeling great - I've got some weird puss or snot thing on the left side of my throat. God, I hope it's not strep or mono. That would suck. So, if it's still there tomorrow when I get up I'm going to take a trip to Urgent Care or the clinic or someplace because I can't afford to be sick right now.
Tuesday, January 06, 2009
Day two, January 2009
Food today:
4 HB Egg whites
2 slices Canadian Bacon
1 packet Blue Diamond All Natural Almonds (blah)
2 Diet Coke with Splenda
1 Low moisture String Cheese
Chicken mix (needs more cheese for tomorrow)
String Cheese
Jello pudding snack (dessert)
Celery and PB snack
2 qts Crystal Lite
8 oz lean steak
I probably should have had some veggies with supper tonight but I was just craving meat and not craving salad at all. Tomorrow I'll be better.
Monday, January 05, 2009
Day one, January 2009
SO today was Phase 1, Day one. Here's the eats:
Scrambled eggs - 4 egg whites, 1 full egg
Chicken mix*
Cottage cheese with crushed cashews
I piece spitchimor (or however it's spelled)
Chicken mix for supper
3 SF chocolate pieces
2qts Crystal Lite Peach Tea
1 Diet coke with splenda
*Chicken mix is chicken in Italian dressing with tomatoes, veggie mix, and cheese.
The one bad thing I did is that the Chicken Mix with the veggies has carrots and I totally forgot that I'm not supposed to have carrots the first two weeks. But considering the limited amount that I eat of them, I'm not going to pick them out of my steamed veggie mix. It's just a pain in the ass and not worth it.
What I'll probably do to compensate is stay on Phase 1 for at least three weeks instead of just 2. We'll see on that though because I will probably be really crabby in two weeks since it's rag week and I won't have had bread since yesterday. AARRGGHHH!
But there we go. It's a start. I bought groceries today and cut up celery for tomorrow and I have HB eggs for tomorrow as well. I took out lean steak for tomorrow night's meal - maybe. :) I just need to get some more SF chocolate so I can curb those cravings. One piece three times a day is under the calorie mark and helps me out.
I'm at 160, and by May I hope to be at 140. that's my goal. Keep me on task here folks. I need it.

I'm back
That's all a side point to the fact i have a marathon in 7 weeks. I'm really really scared about this one. I haven't ran in 3 weeks due to youth camp, work, youth camp, and just being all screwed up.
So tomorrow I'm getting back on track. I will run - not for distance - but at least for an hour and see where I am on the mile markers. I need to get back in sync with my life and this is the week to do it. I can do it!
So Kat, I'm back here - in case you check in. I'll be weighing on Monday to see where I am. I had a whoosh week so hopefully that helped, and I sort of started my eating plan again today. I need to be back on track!
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Alrighty.
First good news: I weighed in yesterday and I was at 159. YAY! I broke the 160 barrier! I'm so excited about that. It has probably helped me when I wanted to get up this morning to work out. Suh-weet.
Eats:
Breakfast: 4 egg whites (1 yolk), 2 pieces lite bread, Smart Balance spread
Snack: Whoppers (boo) and 1 string cheese
Lunch: 4 HB Egg whites (a little yolk), watermelon
Snack: Grapes
Dinner: Chicken Tostado at Incas - however this was primarily lettuce, cheese and tomato, shredded chicken and a very thin tortilla I didn't even realize was there. Ate half the plate and called it good. I probably could have finished it but I'm really glad I didn't. (Lunch tomorrow!)
Exercise:
Total Body 10-minute trainer
3 mile run, 37 minutes (1st mile: 10:38)
Mood: Fabulous! :)
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Someday I'll figure this out
My eating sucks. I'm totally going grocery shopping tomorrow. I need to get some decent food in this place. ugh.
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
let's just say...
BUT, on the bright side, I did weigh in yesterday and I was 162.8 and today I weighed and I was 161.4. YAY! It's whoosh week so I'm hoping that by Monday I'll be down some more.
My eating hasn't been great; I've incorporated bread back into my life, but I did find a 40 calorie a slice Light Wheat Bread which makes me happy because I don't feel guilty when I eat it. And I added watermelon back into my eating plan which I'm totally not supposed to do but it's just too good not to. :)
I also got sucked into an infomercial and bought Tony Horton's 10 minute trainer. My plan is that even if I skip a run in the morning, which I really shouldn't do, I can at least do a 10 minute workout or two, and then maybe another at night. I'm going to start that tomorrow.
How are you doing?
Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Ugh
I woke up at 4:45 with the first alarm, which I rapidly snoozed. Then my next alarm went off at 4:55, as it always does, loud and blaring and annoying. I got out of bed and snoozed it, checking the weather outside as I did. It was beautiful, of course. I crawled back into bed and when the snooze went off again at 5:04, as it always does, I got up and reset the alarm for 5:27 and headed back to bed, pulling the covers back over my head.
But then, my conscience got the best of me and I reminded myself that I'm not going to run at noon (there's no way in hell, I believe were my actual words to my self) and I drug my sorry ass out of bed and headed to the bathroom to pull my hair back and get ready.
I finally made it out to run but my whole body was yelling at me. I could taste the salt from my previous nights' sunflower seed splurge on my lips (could until at least 9:30, in fact) and my body would not stop yawning. I ended up only running about 1.5 and called it good.
SO then to celebrate, I had Taco Bell for lunch and Combos Pizza (those pretzel cheese disgusting things) for afternoon snack. Total junk food day.
Tomorrow will be better.
Note to self
Hello! Are you dumb?

Foodie
1 piece light wheat toast (40 cal) with light Smart Balance butter (1 TBSP 45 Cal) - 85 calories
4 HB Egg whites (apprx 70 Cal)
20 oz Crystal Lite Peach Tea (5 or 10 Cal)
Chicken breast (apprx 5 oz) with shredded cheese and salsa (calories? No idea)
1 donut (whoops)
12 oz Diet Rite with splenda
12 oz Diet Sunkist
20 oz Diet Coke
1 piece light wheat toast (40 cal) with Smart Balance Peanut Butter
½ Cup SB cereal with Skim milk
1 piece string cheese (70 cal)
Sunflower seeds – thousands
¾ cup Carb Smart Breyer's ice cream with SF chocolate syrup
12 oz Crystal Lite Peach Tea
Okay so I will completely and totally admit that eating bread this morning before running really helped and having a little bit throughout the day was nice. It helped me keep my energy up and keep going.
I'm going to bed early tonight so I can get up earlier tomorrow so I can run more. It's all a if:then equation. If I go to bed early, then I can run more tomorrow. If I run more tomorrow, then I'll get in shape faster and possibly lose more weight. craziness.
Starting off right?
Weighed in this morning: 166. Ugh! Probably back to where I started but I'm not going back on phase one. I need my carbs. I'm just going to be careful with how many and which ones I eat.
I ran this morning...once again sleeping with my workout clothes on. I feel pretty good about this run at least. I walked a lot less than I usually do and twice when I started to walk I made myself run to at least the next marker. So my first mile was 10:39.
Actually these were my numbers this morning:
1st mile: 10:39
Ran for 2 more minutes
Walked and watered for 1:30
Ran to 1/2 mile marker 4:39
Walked the crappy part of the trail: 2:30
Ran to next 1/2 mile marker (plus a little to make up for the crappy walk): 4:21
Walked 1 minute
Ran 2 hills: 1 minute
Walked 1:15
Ran down and up hill: 45 seconds
Cool Down: 3:15
Not bad. I need to see if I can lessen my watering time - or run a little bit more of the crappy part of the trail. I only walk this because it's really broken up and then angles 30 degrees like this: / so it's hard to run. I walk it mostly to keep from injuring myself.
Oh and I started the morning with a piece of toast with Smart Balance butter. That helped I think. Now I'm off to shower and eat some cereal. :) Talk to you more later!
Monday, July 07, 2008
OMG
Tomorrow I go back on the plan, however I will be incorporating a little bit of carbs. I need to be running hard and I need carbs for that. So I have light wheat bread for before my morning run and South Beach cereal for when I get back so I can replenish (this will go with my eggs as well).
I will weigh in tomorrow so I have a honest and good idea of where I am. I doubt i lost anything this week but miracles do happen. :)
Your oreos and beer from the 4th? Yeah, that was my yesterday and today, without the beer.
Thursday, July 03, 2008
One more day
pistachios for breakfast
Crystal Lite - 20oz
Subway Chicken Bacon and Ranch wrap (half of the tortilla)
Tea - half unsweetened/half raspberry
Some almonds and cashews for supper
Diet Rite with Splenda - one can
Chicken breast with cheese and salsa
3/4 cup low carb ice cream with SF chocolate
Uffda. I didn't eat or drink like I normally do all day. So I feel really dehydrated.
Exercise: Sadly, today would have been THE perfect day to workout. However, I dragged my butt out of bed at 4:55 and decided to go back to bed because I was so exhausted I could barely stand. I was supposed to run at noon today with a friend but they ditched me without so much as a phone call, so I went to lunch with another friend instead. And I was going to run this afternoon before I left to go home but things kept getting in the way. I suck.

Another day older and deeper in debt
Lots of Crystal Lite Peach Tea before and after run this morning
4 HB Egg whites
1 CF Caramel candy
1 Diet Dr. Pepper
Beef Jerky stick
2 oz Pistachios
1 string cheese
Water with Fruit Punch CL
Half a chicken breast with cheese and salsa
More PT CL
The equivalent of 3 cookies – in cookie dough that is
¾ cup low carb ice cream with sugar free chocolate syrup
30 pistachios – which I'm just realizing I shouldn't have eaten since I already had some earlier today. Oh well.
Exercise: Ran 2.5 again this morning. First mile was great - 10:59:09 (I love when I can make an under 11 minute mile - no matter how barely under it is); I walked for 2:32 and then started up again. That was my downfall. Once I stop I have a hard time restarting, especially with the 70% humidity we had this morning. 2nd mile ended up around 12:30 (give or take) - first half mile was 5:30 but the second half was worse - attacked by geese and the mosiquito truck and lack of energy (more on this later). Ended up run/walking for 34:37 total. Not bad considering I had to literally drag myself out of bed. I lifted a little bit at 1230. I have a schedule from Keith from a year ago but some of the exercises I couldn't remember how to do. I did do some "Drive the Car" ab things that Jay had taught me years ago. Then went for a half-mile walk to stay loose before spending the afternoon sitting.
Eating: I'm really enjoying my hard boiled egg whites each morning, I will say. It's been quite lovely to get that protein in me right away. The bad thing is that I'm thinking I need to do something before I run...like a piece of toast or something, just to get me going. My energy really lacked on the second mile and part of that was because I had no fuel to burn - other than wieners from the night before which were seriously not tasting good this morning. But I hesitate to begin back on the bread thing because it truly is my downfall. It's funny with SB - people stress about the lack of potatoes and such, but I can totally go without potatoes. But bread? Hmmm. I do love whole wheat bread though. I should get a bread maker and get whole wheat flour. Then at least I'd know what was going in it and not feel quite so bad about eating it. Or maybe that's worse, I'm not sure. I did forget about lunch today until about 2:30. Then I remembered but wasn't sure how to pull it off since I worked out at noon and showered. Whoops. So I went to the store and picked up some cheese and processed meat and pistachios - not the best but at least it was something. Supper I ate what I should have eaten at lunch and it was okay. The bad thing was the Brian requested cookies for tomorrow and even offered to pay for the ingredients (which I had joked about at one point, but I haven't made cookies in so long that I'd feel bad taking his money). So I made cookies tonight and of course that means i have to try the dough. :) Whoops. I'll have to run extra tomorrow.
Overall:
I am enjoying the morning workouts even thought it's tough to get up in the morning. I've been wearing my running stuff to bed, sans socks and shoes, so all I have to do is get up, shoe up and go. It actually helps in so many ways – it saves time, it saves me from thinking about what to wear in the AM, and I have a harder time talking myself out of running when I'm already dressed. Believe me, I tried really hard this morning. And I do feel better once I'm out there. I don't like running alone so I've been carrying mace which is probably illegal, but I feel better when I'm alone. Of course I think I've seen a total of 3 people on the trails – and that's total for the last two days: 2 bikers and a walker – so I probably don't need it.

The list
Eats:
8 oz Water
8 oz Crystal Lite Peach Tea
4 HB Egg whites
20 oz Crystal Lite Sunrise Delight (2)
Chicken, cheese, veggie thing from last week
1 jell-o sugar free pudding cup (60 cal)
5 hotdogs without buns - basically, just the meat.*
One can, Diet Coke
Exercise:
5:15 - 5:50; 2.5 run/walk; time - too long approx 35 minutes (will wear better watch tomorrow)
So tonight I went to my nephew's birthday party. It was time for dinner and one of SIL's co-workers hands me a plate. *It had a hotdog, on a white bun, with chips on the side. Uffda. I said, "Oh, thanks. You didn't need to get me a plate!" She said it was fine and to enjoy. Ugh. SO I waited until she went outside, took the meat to eat and gave the chips to my mom. I couldn't do it. I so wanted those chips but I stood my ground. :) But then I got hungry and cake was served and I desperately needed something to distract me. So I had another wiener. Then another. Then another and yet another. Oh well. I'm full now.

Blech
So I started reading the SB book again and discovered I wasn't supposed to have sugar free pudding. Whoops. And I learned about the nuts thing again. Shoot.
I'm feeling fat today. I don't like that. And when I feel fat I don't like to run. I SO should have run today - it's beautiful out and all I did was stay in and study. grrr.
Not having a good day.

Despite baseball...
Lisa invited me to the Canaries/Saints game which was awesome. I didn't eat during it and came home and had a little steak on the griddle grill again and then a little ice cream for dessert. Whoops again. Of course it's the low carb stuff so hopefully it won't work against me. Then I had some celery/PB later.
I think I'm doing okay. Tomorrow is weigh in day again. We'll see where I am.
Saturday, June 28, 2008
A home day
I did buy Breyers Low Carb ice cream. It has only 3 or 4 grams of sugar so I think I can get away with this. It's summer! I need ice cream! But I haven't opened it yet. Maybe tonight I'll have a little while I watch my movie.
Oh and I forgot to mention I did have a pop yesterday - diet dr. pepper. I broke down only because I was exhausted. It was okay and I don't think it really set me back. I haven't had a desire for it or diet coke since.
I think things are going okay. We'll see what happens Monday.

Trips make eating hard, yet easy
Dinner was divine. I had a petit filet mignon with green beans almondine and steamed veggies - which was basically zuccini, carrots and more green beans. Yum though. I actually felt full, which was interesting considering I had had two meals all day and a shit load of water.
Today was a little better in that I started my day with an omelet with cheese, broccoli, peppers and tomatoes. Lunch was bad - pistachios. I just wanted a hamburger so bad and I thought I better hold out just a little longer. Dinner I had scrambled eggs with cheese and jalepeno stuffed olives. Yummy.
This weekend will be tough since I'll be home and studying a lot. I like to snack when I study so I stay awake and alert. But I have some celery left and I need to go get some skim milk so I could pick up more.
I miss popcorn. I love popcorn. I miss it.
I haven't weighed since Monday. I used to weigh every day, then twice a week and my former neighbor - known as A1 on this and other blogs in my world - was a doctor and she had done weight watchers or SB, I can't remember, and she made me swear I wouldn't weigh more than once a week. So Monday AM I'll weigh again and see where I am. Hopefully I'll have dropped a few. I'd love to get below 160 this week or next. It's only 3 pounds so I'm hoping that'll happen. I think I'll feel a little more positive about all this if I can get in the 150's, even if they are high. :)
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Another day down
I feel like I had something else but I can't remember. Oh well. I drank a lot of crystal lite again and am now enjoying SF chocolate Skim milk. mmmm...
Bad thing - I didn't get up this morning again for running. I blame my friend Jason for one - for calling after 10 two nights in a row, and I blame the lack of carbs. I really need some extra energy.
Of course I chatted with K today and found out that next weekend, over the 4th, will be full of sugar and fun. Hmmm...that'll be interesting coming off of these last two weeks.

Back to basics
But, like I said, I used to list all the food I ate. It was a little nerve-wracking because then I had to be accountable for what I was eating each day, knowing that I would be posting it later for people read.
So here you go: my meals for Today, beginning of week 2 of Phase I
Egg whites for breakfast (4). I don't like the yolk so I only eat the whites. I also had a Sunrise Delight Crystal Lite and then a Peach Tea to follow it up. For snack I had pistachios (yum!) and string cheese (this was first and then the nuts to get the cheese taste out of my mouth). For lunch I had a salad - lettuce, chicken (which tasted funny - I hope it was the seasoning and that I don't get sick), some cheese and cucumbers - with OG dressing and SF Jell-o Pudding for dessert. I had some more pistachios this afternoon for a snack and then had a SB Meal (Kung Pao Chicken) for dinner. It's for phase 1 which makes me happy, but has way less veggies than it used to, which does not make me happy. I also had some SF Red Vines. Overall I've drank a lot of liquid today.
Oh and I did try the griddle grill last night and I think it would work better with steak than chicken since it's for searing not cooking clear through. I guess I'll have to get me some steak. :) I like that on the grill better anyway. Chicken is great baked and all the recipes I have can work in the oven. I just don't like using the oven in summer if I don't have to.
Monday, June 23, 2008
Much better
I also went to Olive Garden today and bought 4 bottles of their dressing. I love this stuff and it's the only dressing I like on my salad. So now I have some that I can take to work. YAY!
I also had some skim milk with Hershey's Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup. I was so excited to find this. I love chocolate milk but I never have it because of the sugar in the chocolate. It tasted so good. *sigh*
And we continue this week. One week down, one to go!
Blew it
I met a friend whom I haven't seen in awhile for lunch and we went to Subway. We always order the same thing when we go because we tend to eat alike. It's funny, like our work, "You fly, I'll buy" policy which is basically what we did except that we went together. But my friend paid and I told them what we wanted.
Our standard is a chicken bacon and ranch wrap. I thought this would be okay and I'd unroll it and just fork it. But when it was complete and we were at the table getting ready to eat I realized I didn't have a fork and I really, really, really wanted that tortilla - if only for a little bit of carbs so I could feel awake again.
So I ate it.
Though, I will say, I did pull off about half of the tortilla and only kept what was necessary to keep it together in a roll of sorts. The rest I tossed.
We also did the meal deal which was fine until I remembered I gave up Diet Coke so I had the raspberry sweetened tea, which I'm guessing was sweetened with sugar. Dammit. And the chips I just took home with me to eat at another time.
Well - that's only one meal and I do feel mucho better and am actually feeling like I can accomplish things this afternoon. I have half of my kitchen cleaned and 4 loads of laundry in. I took a break for some celery and PB and thought I'd write here.
Hopefully the lunch won't set me back too much. I'll have to work hard to erase the damage, so to speak, but I'm doing that anyway.
My excitement, which I will put on my other blog as well, I got a two sided griddle today - one side is the griddle, the other a grill so I can grill during the winter. I'm excited to try it out.
Weigh in
I did run this morning...well Run/Walk is more like it. I went 4.5 which was good but it didn't feel that great since I had to walk so much. So I'm going to also incorporate my breathing device to help my breathing get stronger. I feel like i've been a smoker for years the way I breathe when I run. Not good. Though it's a little to be expected since my dad smoked in the house at least a pack a day until I was 13. And then I used to spend a lot of time in a bar in seminary a few years ago...that's another story for another day. But, point is, I'm sure my lungs are caked with soot anyway.
Sooo there you have it. 20 pounds to go. No set date to make it by, I just want to do it healthy and steadily (though I guess I would like to have it gone by September so I can have a good month of lightness before the marathon).
How are you doing?
Sunday, June 22, 2008
Hmmm
I'm not feeling the need for Diet Coke, which makes me happy. Maybe I can kick that habit in a good way.
I'm feeling a little low today - I'm not sure if it's because of my social life or if I'm needing carbs. We'll see.
Tomorrow I'll weigh in and let you know where I am and how far I need to go. AND I'm going to run in the morning so I'll get that completed too. :)
Hope you're doing well!

Funny trip
Yesterday Mom and I headed to the cities. She brought along Chex Mix for us to snack on - not the normal chex mix (which I wouldn't be able to eat either) but the chocolate truffle stuff. I inwardly said, "ugh" and then packed up some celery, PB, hard boiled eggs and string cheese - oh and some SF chocolate since I can have a little of that. She looked at me and asked what I was doing so I explained the whole "back on South Beach and can't eat that stuff" thing. She was a little miffed I didn't tell her that but who goes around telling people they're on a new eating plan again? Oh well. She ate that while I ate my celery.
Overall I'm doing well with the eating. A little too much SF candy today but I'm getting better at figuring out what I can order in places again: Salad at Chipotle but no chips, Sub at Subway but don't eat the bread, that kind of thing.
I don't really feel different yet, which the first time I did this I did, but maybe that'll change when i step on the scale Monday. Eek!

Uffda kind of day again
But I do know that last night after having eggs for supper and some Sugar Free candy for dessert, my tummy was going gurgle gurgle gurlge. You know that feeling? That oh crap (lit.) feeling. It's to be expected. This is a usual feeling with SB, and I don't mind it. It's that cleansing kind of feeling.
But this morning, when I didn't eat breakfast (again!) and just drank Crystal Lite all morning, my tummy got mad. It hurt...physically hurt.
But then I had some string cheese and pistachios and ran at lunch. I felt better and even more so after lunch.
I'm missing Diet Coke, but I think I'll get over it eventually. Tonight I had my chicken again for supper and I did boil eggs so I'll have those for breakfast. I don't eat the yolk, so I'll just be eating 4 egg whites. Hopefully that'll help in the mornings. :)
I'm getting a little nervous about weighing in on Monday, but I think it'll be okay.
I'm also nervous about traveling this weekend. But I think I can make it work...not as well as I would if I stayed home, but it'll be okay.
Another day down! And hopefully more weight!

Uffda
Last night I had to make a pie...well I didn't have to but I promised Naomi...and so today was rough. Well, last night was rough.
The dough I made was a new recipe and because I have this thing about trying all the recipes I make, I had to sample it. It actually was really good. Really good and full of flour and butter and sugar. *sigh* I didn't eat too much because I didn't want to mess up my life too much.
Then today we had the pie. I went down to watch everyone enjoy it. Luckily EB cut the pieces really small. I broke down after all the oohs and aahs because I had to see if people were truthful or just nice because I was standing there.
I totally screwed up and had a full piece and, can I just say, damn it was good. I'm a damn good baker. This will be the death of me.
The rest of the day was okay. I steered clear of anything else not on the plan, had eggs for supper and overall didn't feel too hungry, and if I did I had celery and PB instead of chips or a candy bar. So that made me feel good.
The only bad thing, other than the pie, is that I have a headache. I haven't had a Diet Coke since Monday and going from 3 or 4 a day in the past week on the road to NONE...yeah, I have a headache. Hopefully that'll go away soon.

Starting again
My run this morning was good. I woke at 5:12 - right on schedule like I usually do. But I stalled and didn't get to the base until an hour later to run. So I ran 2 miles in 25 minutes (12.5 minute mile). Not bad but not good. I need to get stronger and faster...or at least more consistent. I walked too much. But I also dressed warmer than I needed to. It was chilly but once I got going I go really warm.
Eating today was good, except for forgetting breakfast. I had string cheese and a piece of beef jerky for snacks. Lunch was a SB meal that was actually okay for Phase 1. I was so excited to discover that. I'll have to pick up more. And I had jello-pudding for dessert.
After work I went grocery shopping and picked up a few more items to help me with my snacks and meals. I came home and made the chicken mix I usually have, just without the pasta. In a couple weeks I can add back in the pasta because I eat whole wheat and that's allowed at least.
Today wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I drank a lot of crystal lite which helped. It's just the breakfast thing. I wish SB made breakfast meals premade. But I'll figure out something.
I'm not going to weigh this week. Since it's rag week it's just not smart. So next Monday I'll weigh so I can see where I am and how much I really need to lose. The ultimate goal is 140 at least, maybe 135. I'm just not sure how much that's going to require me to lose.
I need to do this. The marathon is coming up quick and I really want to do well this year. I want to feel like I can accomplish it without worrying about being able to walk afterward. Debbie was laughing this weekend when we were talking about it because I said I have a Guthrie show that night (which is beneficial for traveling purposes, just not great since last year I had some trouble.). Last year I got blisters (wrong socks) so I had a lot of trouble walking. I also didn't stretch very well after the race and so I tightened up quickly making it hard to move.
I want to be better than this. I'm getting my motivation back which I desperately need right now.

another day
I have been eating SF candy today still, but not as much as usual. who knows. I don't really have the carb cravings like I have in the past. Maybe that's a good thing. But I do need to up the salad intake. I haven't been eating as much lately. I need to go to OG and get some dressing. I do have chicken and tomatoes so that's a good thing at least.
another bad day
Hopefully today will be better. One bonus...I weighed this morning and I'm down to 157. :)

Am I in trouble?
Making headway?
I haven't been writing about my food lately...mostly because it's been awful. I had a chai tea latte on Monday, but I don't think that messed with me too much. What has messed me up is SF Red Vines and SF chocolate. I've been living on those, string cheese and pistachios. I finally forced myself Tuesday night to bake chicken, and I put salsa and cheese on it - which i know is a no-no on Phase I since salsa has sugar - but I figured I needed something and most of the sugar should have baked off. The chicken tasted really good so i was glad I did that. Plus I got to eat it yesterday for lunch and I'll do that again today. I had eggs with cheese, peppers, tomato, and olives last night for supper. That was yummy too until i started eating pistachios again. sheesh.
But it's not going too bad. I'm over the hump of needing/wanting/craving carbs - I'd still like them but it's not as prominent as it was last week. And I'm down to 159 - so that's 5 pounds down. Next week is supposed to be warmer so I'll be back running again. Which is good since I have 60 days until the Brookings Marathon. It's do or die time now. I have to really push training the next few weeks. 60 days to prep for a marathon is insane but maybe I can still do it. If not, maybe i'll just go up and pick up my t-shirt and go. :) hahaha. No... I'd like to run it if I can but I'm really going to have to bust my butt the next few weeks both with strength training and cardio. Two-a-days may be a necessity. (If not three...depending on schedules and such).
So there we go. Let's see how I can do.

Weekend of SF
I have to weigh in the morning. i'm more than a little nervous.

Not sure about this
Anyway, for lunch I had salad and chicken. It wasn't bad. The guys I ate lunch with all had cake in front of me though...grrr. And tonight I went out to supper with Lisa and Emmy and I had the salad bar and chicken. It was yummy and I got to bring half of it home for tomorrow.
I need to buy some more pistachios though. Those are my favorite. I can't wait until Tuesday when I can weigh in again. I did on Monday and was 164 or 165. Friday I was 161. I can't weigh this Monday because I'll be in the cities but Tuesday I can. YAY! As long as this keeps working I'm okay with sticking with it.

Whoops
The good news is that I weighed myself this morning (just to see if it's working) and I'm down 3 pounds. So I'll keep going. We'll see. I was thinking of moving to Phase 2 on Monday but I'll weigh again then and see if I can make it the full 14 days.

Uff da
I am still using my notebook - that has been helping, I will say.
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Oh the torture!
I did discover that I drink a lot more tea when I use a glass at work instead of drinking from my Nalgene bottle. That's a good thing, except I need to bring more tea with me then. I had to run home at noon to make some more.
The food does fill me up, I will say that. I'm not quite counting the calories on the 70 calories of snacks like I did last time, but I haven't been doing too bad. I had 2 mini SF candy bars today and then some jell-o. That's not bad.
I need to make my lunch for tomorrow though so off I go. Wish me luck for tomorrow!

Here we go
Tonight I boiled up some eggs, cut up celery, prepared a salad and tuna for lunch tomorrow and started planning my meals for tomorrow.
I forgot how much work it is to be on this plan. At least it seems like work...preparing, measuring, planning. Ugh. I just have to remember that this does work and I have to look good by June.
Well, let's start that over. I have two goals: 1) leaner, stronger, lighter for the marathons; 2) look leaner, stronger, lighter for the opera when I have my date with Evans! at the Cincinnati Opera date.
So I have to keep these goals in mind - leaner, stronger, lighter for marathons and opera. And just keep repeating, "No popcorn, eat cheese!"

Try this again
tomorrow I'm going to do Jay's cleansing - liquid baby. then maybe some fruit tomorrow night and then fruit and liquid Monday, with maybe a little lettuce monday night. Tuesday I should be ready to move into SB again. I need to cut out carbs and sugar so bad. It's not even funny. If I'm even still contemplating running Brookings in May, I desperately need to drop some weight and get back running.
I suck and those thoughts are just dragging me down even farther. Hopefully this restart will get me back on track. If I can sort this out in my life maybe other things will fall back into the place they should be. Crossing fingers.

Day 5

Day 4
Oh, and ran a little today - I think a mile for sure, then I got bored and didn't really run much after that. I HATE TREADMILLS. I'm wondering if I should get an iPod to run on the treadmill. Outside at least I have things to look at; TV and shed walls just don't cut it. I also did pushups (20) and situps (25). I need to up those numbers but both RB and I have that goal so that'll help.

Day 3
I don't know if this whole SB restart is going to work or not. I hate to be negative too soon, but it is the holiday season. I'm trying to hold off on the snacks, especially cookies and such, but who knows how that will go. I didn't run much last week but have to this week. It's just that time of year again where I just want to curl up at home and knit. I don't know. Wish me luck.

Restarting
I won't necessarily be writing everything I eat each day but I will keep this as a journal of how I'm doing and how I'm feeling. Too many cookies lately have caused my weight to balloon up again. Not good.
So see you Saturday and we'll start this fun game again. Woohoo!

A resurrection of sorts - Day Zero
Okay – so here I am again. I explained on the other blog that I'm not going to go back on SB right now (maybe after the marathon) but I need some place to track what it is I eat during the day so I can really see what it is that's keeping me from having the energy I need. So today is Day Zero and we'll begin tomorrow.
